Per the guide I found, I download, tested, and crashed with Subrip. Then repeated it with AVIdemux (mentioned in a comment). SubToSup did work but my DVD authoring program won't use sup files. So is there a converter that'll do sub/idx to srt or sup to srt (preferably the first) that actually works?

  2. Hi-

I've used SubRip to OCR successfully a few hundred times. But if it didn't work for you, open the IDX in Sub Resynch (comes in the VobSub package) and OCR to SRT using that.

That was my first thought too, but every time I've downloaded it (yes, I've dl-ed and deleted it multiple times now) I can't figure out where anything is. The executable files in the package I get are:

    VobSubCutter
    VobSubJoiner
    VobSubConfigure
    DirectVobSub Configure

    Where's SubResynch?

Since you are specifically asking about subtitles, better moved to the Subtitle Forum.

  6. It's called subresync.exe. Comes in my VobSub package.

Sometimes it takes a while, or a good topic subject line to get attention, but manono should be able to help you. Still, the proper forum is the best place to get the best response to a question.

  9. Here:

    subresync.exe

After all that trouble you're having with the subs, I hope it works for you.

Muchos gracias, that worked perfectly and effortlessly (a first time in my freeware experience).

^Scratch that, I've got the dreaded 30-second delay on all my subtitles now. Can that be avoided or reversed with SubResynch or ConvertXtoDVD?

  12. Hehe, if it's not one thing it's another, eh? Yes, VobSubCutter can adjust the delay in the IDX/SUB subtitles. If you didn't discover the wrong delay until the DVD had already been already authored, then DVDSubEdit is your friend. Check out Section 3.2:

Well...I can mess around with the subtitle timing all I want in VobSubCutter. But, I checked my coasters again and it turns out the audio is also out of synch (I have no idea why I didn't see it sooner).

    *edit*

I must be losing it if I forgot to mention this...:S

I had the idea to play the source file with VLC and get it to use the srt file I'd created before burning a coaster so I could see whether the srt or the dvd had the real problem. Using an un-modified srt file the timing was perfect. So there must be something wrong with the burning process. I'm going to try one more coaster using the sub/idx and srt with no other modifications and see what happens (this time I'll test it on my PS2 as well). Be back in an hour.

  14. Why waste DVDRs? Test the DVDs in PowerDVD or some such. Or burn to DVD-RW for testing in the standalone before making a final copy.

I don't have DVD-RWs. But you are probably right that I should be testing before burning since it's clear this is going to take a lot longer than I'd hoped (and I've only got 3 vacation days left). But I can do that just fine with VLC for now. In fact, PowerDVD looks like it has less compatibility.

Well, I converted it without burning and tested it in VLC. The audio was delayed, and the subtitles were nowhere to be found, even though ConvertXtoDVD says it inserted them. Clearly it's just not compatible with mkvs. Is there a similar program that is or am I stuck waiting for an update?

  17. ConvertXtodvd often doesn't put subs on my films completely.

Why not just get a divx dvd player? About $50. If you get that 5960, you can play stuff from a HD attached to it.
