  1. I hope I posted in the right section.
I used winDV and captured a lot of clips from the same tape, half of them have no sound the others do have perfect sound.I should have looked at the camera and played back the tape listening for sound but I did not think to do that at the time.My question is what caused this(I assume the files I have already captured are duds).

The silence may be caused by plugging headphones into the microphone hole of the camera - something I have practised myself...

  3. no,there were no headphones plugged in
I don't understand why some of the files captured ok but others didn't,they all came from the same tape.

This has come up before. There is a bug in WinDV that causes this sometimes when using the Camera control feature. Uncheck the checkbox next to "Capture" then manually press play on the camera and then click record in WinDV.

  5. EDIT - gadgetguy replied at the same time as me, so my suggestions may be redundant.

    Three things to try:

    1. Play the tape and verify that there really is audio on the parts where it is missing after capture.

    2. Try a different capture utility - e.g., Windows Movie Maker - to verify that it isn't a quirk of WinDV

    3. Try capturing to Type 1 if you are using Type 2 (and vice versa). Type 2 DV AVI files have a second copy of the audio (so older programs can work with them). It's possible that the creation of this second copy of the audio is at fault. Type 1 DV AVI files simply store the audio exactly as it is received.
