I have been going crazy trying to find dvd-r's that are 1x-8x for my JVC dvd recorder (that's the only kind it reads, can't seem to read 16x). Have 1x-8x dvd-rs gone obsolete? Or is it just harder to find now? Anyone know where I can buy them besides online? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Yes, you are going crazy. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Yes, manufacturers are going to the higher speeds as that's what sells. There are still a few 4X DVDs out there, but they are getting harder to find. You may do OK for a year or two more, but I suspect there will be no 4X available by then. Most DVRs can use the higher speed discs, even if they burn at a lower speed. 8X is a little more common, and you shouldn't have that much trouble finding them.

Look around and try a few different brands. There may even be some 16X discs that will work on your DVR at the lower speeds.

And BrokenOne, in the future please use a more descriptive subject title in your posts to allow others to search for similar topics. I will change yours this time. From our rules:
Try to choose a subject that describes your topic.
Please do not use topic subjects like Help me!!! or Problems.

  3. I'd be curious to know what your objection to buying blank DVDs online is.

    Here's what I use: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-8x-dvd-r-media-value-line.html

Although I'm considering moving up to the Premium Line the next time I buy some.

I need some now I am on my last disc. And it being christmas it wouldn't get here i n time for what I am planning to record. I have nothing against ordering online whenever except for this time of the year. That's all. Thank you for the help.

  6. Alrighty then.

You know, many blank DVDs that are rated 16x don't have to be burned at 16x, they can be successfully burned at 8x or even 4x. Just FYI.

  8. If you are not fussy about the brand, try Circuit City. They usually have the Nexxtech DVD-R 8x discs in 50 pack spools for around $9.99-$14.99.

I haven't had any problems with this media, but if you are interested, here's the information from DVD Identifier about the media.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:UME01]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [Ume Disc Manufacturing Ltd.]
    Manufacturer ID : [UME01]
    Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    [ DVD Identifier V4.3.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

And here's a link to the DVD media section here about this product. https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=3615#comments

Unfortunately the specifics of which media IDs are compatible with which recorders is not information I have at hand. I only mean to second redwudz's point about:
