Just curious but how come it takes about 4-5 hours to encode a DVD to h.264 when compared to about 1-1.5 hours for conversion to XviD. I'm using StaxRip to do the conversion to h.264. Is there another way to convert it to that format faster? I've tried Nero Recode; I think that video quality of a NR video file is really crappy.

AVC simply requires more power to encode than MPEG-4 Part 2. You can of course change settings to make it encode faster. For instance x264 should be able to encode faster than the slowest Xvid settings, but then the slowest x264 settings will be much much slower than Xvid's.

Ah I see. I guess thats why the resulting outputted file looks so great, IMO at least from my recent encode.

Is there any difference in encoding output = avc or = h.264. - I use SUPER software for conversion right now, for instance.
Thx.
