Hello All. I apologize if this has been asked before, but could not find the info. I am trying to take footage from a DVD that I recorded from my camera into a DVD recorder. I know how to make a copy but not how to pull an editable file off of the DVD. Is there a software (preferably inexpensive) that I can use to get some kind of file I can put in a timeline to edit? I use both a Mac and a PC so info on either would be fine. Thanks for any help you can give me.

VS10 will import the VOB files from the DVD and use that to edit. The MPeg2 will be decompressed in the process but that will be true for most methods.
For Premiere or FCP you need to demux the VOB files to normal MPeg2 or DV format or uncompressed formats that they will import.
VS10 will do this for you. Is there some reason you need to edit in Premiere or FCP?Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Those are the programs I use. So, I figured I could import a file into them. I know how to get the VOB files off of the DVD, I have a program to do that. But to demux, do I need VS10 or is there another alternative that is more inexpensive. I'm just not sure I need VS10 since my other programs can do most of what it does. Thanks for your help!!

You're basic problem is Premiere and FCP don't expect VOB as an input. They want uncompressed, DV or HDV. Premiere will reluctantly import MPeg2 but not multiplexed VOBs.
So, to ingest a VOB, you need to demultiplex and maybe decompress VOBs to import. Here is one guide:

Others can recommend additional tools.
Now that low end consumer camcorders and DVD recorders are using DVD as an acquisition media, many consumer programs have added VOB import that will internally demux and decompress to the project format.
Your choice is to use manual techniques or just edit in a consumer program or use the low end program to convert VOB to uncompressed AVI and uncompressed audio for import to higher end programs. -
Thanks so much, that's the exact info I was wanting. I will look into downloading one of those programs. I really appreciate your time and help! Happy Holidays to you!!
