After getting my footage back from telecine, i spent a few days breaking it up and decided to apply 16:9 letter box effect to get a better idea of what i had to work with. After having moved around the frame for a few shots i chose to go with slugs instead, so i selected all my footage, right clicked, and "removed attribute:filter". I got to a certain point and found that the letter boxing effect was still applied, perplexed i checked for slugs hidden in the timeline but found none, then i checked the filters, still nothing. I opened the original footage outside of FCP and found to my horror that indeed the letterboxing effect had been permanently applied to one of four rolls. I tried opening old saves before the effect had been applied and this did nothing, so indeed FCP has screwed me complete. Has this happened to anyone else? Do i have any legal recourse against apple?

anyone can sue anyone for anything if you have the right lawyer and you pay him out of your own pocket. getting a judgement for something caused by your own mistake is a little harder. first rule of computing, never ever make changes to the only copy of any file. backup the original or suffer the consequences. any 12 year old these days knows that lesson well.

ettin you need to grow up. not even apple, the undisputed king of mollycoddling and hand holding can make every program completely idiot proof.

Was a complete overwrite made of the original footage file? Were there no backups of the original footage? Yeah, go ahead and file a lawsuit against Apple. That'd be like steering your car into a tree and then suing the auto maker for the damages. And to respond to an intelligent answer by calling the adviser an effing retard -- that speaks even more loudly of your character.

maybe you could, after backing up whats left, make the rest of the rolls in the letterbox to match...at least until you can figure out how to replace it
