I'm not sure as I write this if the problem is in the files or in the program. I have some files that I acquired that are labeled .xvid.avi, but when I try to load these into TMPGEncoder programs (Plus and/or SourceCreator,) it causes my computer to reboot. I've attempted to use a couple of other encoding programs, but can't get them to work.

Is there something in .xvid that is causing this? Because I tried using TMPGENCoder Plus with some .avi files labeled xaax.title.avi, but plus said that it couldn't handle the video. At least with that it didn't cause a reboot.

Any help is clearing up this mystery will be greatly appreciated.

First I would drop them into Gspot 2.60 and see if anything unusual shows up. Then you might try VirtualDub Mod or the regular VD. I suspect the index could be messed up. You can resave one with VD and see if TMPGEnc will accept it then. Also look for MP3 VBR audio, as it causes all kinds of problems.

For extensions, just the last one is used. I also assume you have 'Hide extensions for known file types' turned off in 'Folder Options' so you are seeing the real extension? If it's .xvid, change it to .avi.

I downloaded and ran "Gspot" as suggested. What it can up with is that after my crash of the other day, I didn't have the .xvid/divx codecs on my system. So I reinstalled them. Now lets see If the TMPGEncoder programs will be able to handle the .xvid files without problems. I already made the adjustments from the "sticky" in re .xvid and TMPGencoder.
