Found an interesting document from Phillips about ADIP on DVD+R

    http://www.licensing.philips.com/includes/download.php?id=6483&filename=4288.pdf

Successful recording of DVD discs at higher recording speeds and of dual layer versions
mandates a very accurate matching between disc and recorder. Today the media ID (MID)
code procedure, as inherited from CD-R, is still the most popular way of achieving the disc-drive match for recording. However, this procedure only works for known discs, for which optimum write strategies are known in the media table in the firmware of the drive. For unknown discs the MID code procedure gives no solution and often a default (or gamble) strategy is applied that is mostly highly unreliable. In order to solve this problem all write strategy parameters for DVD+R/RW are stored in the ADIP area of the discs and can be used by every recorder. It is to be considered as the most reliable and solid solution for disc and drive makers

Does anyone know which writers and media support ADIP?

  2. 1.) Plextor Autostrategy - devised by Plextor & Taiyo Yuden a few years ago, & has experienced mixed but mostly negative opinions. IMO

    see here: http://www.plextor.com/english/news/pdfs/intelligent-recording-whitepaper.pdf

2.) BENQ/Phillips(w/Nexperia chipsets) - Solidburn (starting ~mid 2005 with the Benq 1640 and moving forward)

3.) Lite-On - (HT)HyperTuning and (OHT)Online HyperTuning (Supported by all 5S and 6S generation drives to my knowledge)

Those are the only ones I am aware of - there could be more.

Thanks for the info. Based on postings from owners these folks seem to be no more immune from needing firmware updates than anyone else.

That's a very true statement. Of course, these autostrategy functions for the most part have to be turned on/activated by the user in some manner. No way to know how many users reporting problems actually did that I suppose.
