I need software that will convert vob (standard dvd) to mpeg files. I also need to be able to split the files into smaller segments in mpeg. I also need to be able to split mpeg files. Any additional video editing would be nice but not necessary. I do not want a program that has slideshow or movie making. I already have this but it doesn't do the above things.

I tried Flash DVD Ripper, which would work but it won't open a mpeg file and let me split it. It only open vob files and converts and splits them.

I have downloaded several programs but nothing I've tried does all of these things.
I am looking for something relatively simple. Anyone here have any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance,

    Linda

If required decrypt first then use VOB2MPEG then Videoredo to edit. BTW, Videoredo will also open VOB files.

In addition to what Steveryan recommends, I would add just one more tool.

Try MPG2CUT2 for cutting/splitting/joining (appending) mpeg files. It's free and quite good & fast.

    Hi,
MPEG-VCR www.womble.com is quite good at this sort of thing as well, It will open decrypted VOBs and let you do everything you want all in one program, however it's not free but it's very good and no AV Sync issues.

I've been very happy with the results I get from DGIndex and Mpeg2Schnitt. DGIndex will read and join decrypted vob files (and vro files). The output is demuxed to m2v video and ac3 audio. If there's any audio delay, it will be in the ac3 file name. Mpeg2Schnitt can load audio/video together, and several sets at a time, for joining/cutting. Very accurate cuts on I and P frames. The output can be one big m2v/ac3 pair or several sets of seperate cuts. The m2v/ac3 pair can then be remuxed to mpg with Imago Muxer, though I prefer mplex (command line, scripted, part of DVDAuthor).

    Gmac,

I downloaded MPeg Video Wizard trial. I'm not sure I know the difference in the different ones available.

After making several clips is there a way to export each clip to an individual mpg file? I figured out how to have only one clip and export it to one mpg file. But it would be faster if I could do several in a batch but I need them output to seperate files.

    Thanks,

    Linda

    Linda,
I also have MPEG Video Wizard and it's one of the best out there, especially the latest version, MPEG-VCR is more basic and is the core program that Video Wizard is built on, however I'm not aware of any Batch utility, I usually find it (MPEG Video Wizard) smart renders clips so fast that I can do one after another in a very short time. I use it for making music video clips from concert footage so I import the VOB drag it to the input window, mark the in and out points and then drag it to the timeline, apply fades or filters as needed and click the export button. make sure you export it as "Automatic" if you don't want any quality loss (this works with transitions and fades but NOT filters). Also in the input window you just have to mark the in and out points to drag your clip to the timeline, you don't have to "trim" anything in the input window, that way you don't have to reload the original clip every time you want to make an edit.
