What is the basic torrent-to-playable-dvd process?

Newbie questions like this must really annoy you guys, and I'm sorry for that, but I really need an idiot-proof step-by-step process guide to get a downloaded torrent onto a disc to play on my dvd player?

Which programs, what darned buttons to press, are they free, etc?

Try ConvertXToDVD or the freeware version DivxToDVD. You can't get much simpler and it should work on the vast majority of those files and do a decent job of conversion to DVD. The payware version is recommended and it isn't expensive.

You may run into some MP3 VBR audio or some strange video formats that it can't handle. A program like Gspot 2.60 will identify what codecs are needed and the components and specification of the files. If ConvertXToDVD can't handle them, then you may need to do a little more work and study first before converting.

There's no one be all and all process from start to finish due to the many different "flavours" that can be contained within torrents. If you have a movie file format such as AVI, MPEG or WMV then convertxtodvd is your one stop shop.

However, if you have a compression formation such as 50 or so RAR files, and/or disc images (BIN/CUE), then you need to either extract what is in those to then be able to convert to DVD, or alternatively just burn the images as they were intended (sometimes VCD or SVCD).

And then there's all sorts of conundrums like VBR MP3 audio, whether or not to join multiple files together first, Is the torrent high enough quality in the first place to spend the time converting to DVD, is it worth spending time on filtering to improve the video/audio, and no doubt many others. Some might say that it is just easier to buy the original DVD if available.

I would suggest that you only use Nero for burning. IMHO there are far better softwares available for everything else. And even then some will suggest that IMGBurn / DVDDecrypter is better to burn with as well.

ImgBurn is for burning DVD Video files. That is all that it does.

You have to convert your AVI files (or whatever) to DVD Video format.

The flow goes like this:

1.) Determine the type of files you have by using GSpot (check video and audio properties)
2.) Demux the audio and convert to AC-3 format if something else (like MP3)
3.) Convert the video to MPEG-2 DVD spec video files
4.) Put it all together with a DVD Authoring program
5.) Burn to a DVD Video disc.

Exactly what programs you use are up to you ... many different choices are available.
