Question about cutting/editing

Ok, I have a trailer for eragon, and i want to cut out a part in the trailer and use the clip for a avatar (i already know how to do the avatar thing.) It's just I can't find/don't know how to cut parts out of a video clip. I don't know what tool to use. I want to know how to do it, and what tools to use. Tools that don't cost any money and one's that cost money. Just so i know which one's are good.

If you can play the clip through a software like PowerDVD or similar it will have a screenshot feature. It will be probably be at 720X480 or something like that, so you'll have to use an image editing tool to shrink it down to fit as an avatar. I think avatars are usually like 80X80 or something close to that.

If the trailer is in quicktime or some other format play it full screen and when you get the part you want hit the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. Then open up MS Paint or any image editing application and hit "Ctrl+V". This will paste the image into your application and you can save it as a picture file from there.
