    I have a couple of downloaded-from-newsgroups mp4 files that won't play.

I opened them into GSpot and got the following info.

    The path and the size.

Under CONTAINER was this: File type 3GPP Media (.3GP)(MP4 compat.) Mime type: video/mp4.

Under the VIDEO heading, and then under the STAT subheading was this: READY (181 codecs installed.

Under PROPOSED CODEC SOLUTIONS AND TESTS, and then under MS, A/V, the number one was highlighted in blue. Clicking on it resulted in this: Rendering failed. Following is the error reported by DirectShow: 0x80040218: No combination of filters could be found to render the stream.

Are these files playable? Or are they corrupted somehow?

    Thanks for the time.

Try converting them to other using super ... super has codecs built internally ... if it fail's , then there's a problem .

I agree. VideoLAN VLC is great! It can play MPEG, DivX and even H.264. It even plays files that the encoder itself can't playback!
I hate VHS. I always did.
