I have several MP4s that I got from the same website and they all play fine on my PC. However, I cannot get one of them to play. I used MediaInfo to see if maybe it was using different codecs but it isn't. Everything looks ok and the file size looks about average. Even if it didn't finish downloading, it should still play. I'm using Media Player Classic and ffdshow. Can anyone help me get this video to play? It's not available anymore and probably won't be ever again.

It's probably broken. You bring up the probability that it didn't finish, so I suspect that's what happened.

If it is a public domain video, use bittorrent. It's always the quickest way for me when I download those things that are hard to find (for example, Night of the Living Dead, though not hard to find).

You never know. They may have taken it down to spare the bandwidth and may have moved it specifically to torrents.

Even if it didn't finish downloading it should still play. I had one before that didn't finish downloading and it played fine. It was from the same website and the same type of file. So that's most likely not what the problem is. Any other ideas? Is there some sort of (free) program that can check it for errors and then fix them?

It's not available anywhere, even on bittorent. I should know, us fans have been complaining about it for years.

VLC is usually robust enough to play broken files, if there is enough information in the headers of what you have to get it started. It may break up along the way, but it may play what is downloaded. However, if you don't have enough of the right parts of the file, it will not play, period.

Download it again if you want make sure it actually plays properly.
