When I play a DVD, there are two ways to enable subtitles:

    1. By enabling English subtitles in the "language" menu of the DVD. - On the DVD I backed up those subtitles display in large yellow text.

    2. By enabling "Caption-1" in the TV menu or pressing the Caption button on the TV's remote. These subtitles display in smaller white text.

    PROBLEM:
After I backed up aDVD using DVD Shrink 3.2, I can get the item-1 subtitles but am unable to get the item-2 subtitles (captions). (Note: I had ripped the DVD to the hard drive using DVD Fab Decrypter first, then used DVD Shrink to remove all of the extras but did keep the subpictures.)

What exactly on the DVD holds the item-2 captions? Are they in the extras, though I don't see anything in the extras that look like captions.

  2. Captions and subtitles are completely different.

Captions are contained in the MPG file itself, as line 21 data. These are often removed by various processing programs. Subtitles are a seperate stream.

I do not deal much with extracting captions from DVD, but there have been some good threads on the subject.

  3. Some versions of dvdshrink were known to take out captions, try another version.

Thanks for this info Nelson. Very helpful in understanding where captions are stored.

    Handyguy,

Thanks to your post I double checked my version of DVD Shrink and found that it is 3.1.2, not 3.2. I had the "2" in my mind and was thinking I had 3.2. I downloaded 3.2 from a couple of different sites and will try them and see what happens.

    Thanks,
    Mks

    Handyguy,
You nailed it. I installed Shrink 3.2 and now the TV captions are copied also.
    Thanks!
