I just purchased a Pioneer 111D to replace my Pioneer 109. I burn on real TYG02 discs using DVDDecrypter or imgBURN. When burning, I notice that the burning speed follows a weird pattern:
* 0min - 1min: Max speed is 6x (after writing the lead-in)
* At about 1min: The speed drops to 0x, then goes up to 8x
* After that drop, it stays at 8x until completion
Is this normal? Why does it drop to 0x on every disc before going to 8x?
Thanks for any advice -

It's normal. Most burners switch speeds at some point 2 or 3 times.
The reason:
The linear velocity increases as you move outward from the center of the disc. This enables the burner to put down data faster. When the burner switches speeds, usually around 10-20%, and again at 50% or so, it is "shifting gears". It does that by emptying its buffer, spinning up to a faster speed, then restarting the burn where it left off.
I have a Pioneer 109, and burning TYG02 Taiyo Yuden 8X, it starts at about 6X, at about 11% it switches to 8X, then at about 50% it switches again to 12X.
