  1. I have convertx to dvd and i want to convert some avi's with srt subs. I want to convert them to dvd and i have 16 videos that are approximatly 700MB each. How manyvideos can i put on each dvd and retrain the quality they are at. Can i just assume that a dvd is 4.3 GB and that is apprixamatly 4300 MB so i should just divide that by 700 and put 6 videos files on it? Im pretty sure that when i convert an avi to dvd format it will become larger so that wouldnt not be the likely answer to have 6 videos. so how many videos can i put on a single 4.3 gb disc iwth 700mb video files and still have similar quality?

The running time is more important than the filesize - in effect filesize doesn't really mean much to be honest. Some figures to work on would be no more than 3-4 hours on a SL DVDR or 6-7 hours on a DL DVDR. These should give you reasonable results relative to your source.

No ... presuming that these are XVID or DivX AVIs. MPEGs normally require approx 2-4x the bitrate of these types of AVI to retain a similar level of quality.

OF course YMMV and what works for me or anyone else may not be acceptable to you ... I would suggest you try a couple of test scenarios to see what configuration gives you the results you want.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm new at this but I've noticed that with Xvid encoded video files I'm only able to fit about 1GB of uncoverted data onto one singe layer DVD.

The general rule is that you should expect 3 - 4 fold increase in size between Xvid/Divx and Mpeg2 in order to maintain a similar quality when converting to DVD. This is to do with the increase in resolution and the different encoding characteristics.

However the fundamental and overriding rule when encoding is

    Bitrate x Runtime = Space

If you need to push the running time, consider using a better encoder over which you have more control.

Whatever is required. You can't set a specific bitrate, just a quality setting (High/Medium/Low). If you set it to High it will try to use as a high a bitrate as it can, however it may still come in well under.

If you want to set specific bitrates and have control, use an encoder that lets you access those settings : HCEnc is free, tmpgenc plus or CCE basic are cheap.
