I've got dial-up internet connection, which is what I've ALWAYS had. I hear about these various "internet accelerators" around that are somehow supposed to speed up a dial-up connection, or at least make it seem "faster".

But whats the best one out there? I've got firefox browser btw.

Do any of you use one of these accelerators? Any suggestions would be appreciated

  2. All a dialup accelerator does is store files on your computer.
If you keep going to different websites or download different files, it will be the same exact speed. If you go to the same websites all the time, it will be a little faster because you have some of the files already on your computer.

Not necessarily. Most compress the data and what you have at your end is the decompression software (which is what you pay for!)

  4. Many dial-up ISP provides acceleration by let you display reduced resolution of graphics content. That has a decent impact on getting web pages to load.

I am a dialup user, why?, because I live in a Third World country and the price of ADSL or cable is too expensive.

A couple of things you could do in order to obtain some boost are:

    1. Get an external modem, powered externally and that uses a COM port.

    2. Try finding a Firewall called AtGuard, instal it and configure it to block ads, and animated images, including the firewall itself to block all incoming and outgoing non-allowed communications.

    P.S.

I have no experience with dial up accelerators.

I downloaded the bellsouth accelerator. It seems like ALL it does, is control the loading of images. With the little slider that lets you select the quality images will load in, High acceleration means low quality images, low/no acceleration means original quality as the pictures are.

I guess this is good. Afterall, one of the main reasons for long load times on sites is due to all the various, crappy images tacked on everywhere that are file-intensive. Such as, those certain forums out there with no restrictions on signatures and their members who go crazy with their sigs.

Right now i've got the slider set to only load images to about half-quality. Seems faster already becuase of that, though i've yet to really test it(like porn heheh).

Dial-up works well for me and is fast enough. Really, the only times having dial-up annoys me, is when i'm trying to download LARGER files. Like games and or small movie clips.

Or just some sites out there that are loaded down with pictures everywhere, like certain forums.

Where I live, I can't get DSL or cable.

I can get ISDN, though, which is what I use.

But I don't live in a third-world country (at least so I'm told). I live 4.01 miles from the nearest telco's CO - 0.01 miles too far for them to bother testing my line for DSL.

If I need to download something huge, I go to the local coffee shop or pharmacy - both have free wireless access.

Damn! Ok at home my bellsouth dial-up accelerator works, with the bellsouth connection we have.

Now that i'm back at my dorm using the free school dial-up, it won't work(not bellsouth).

Anyone know of a FREE dial-up accelerator? The google searches i got only showed trialware ones that need to be bought after a certain time.
