    Please help.

    1) Purchasing a new Philips Plasma TV
    2) Wanted to get a new Philips DVD player to best work with Philips Plasma TV
    3) Wanted these features in my new Philips DVD player (in this order of priority) a. HDMI output b. 1080/720 Upscaling c. Progressive Scanning d. Optical Audio Output

There are several Philips DVD players that match 3a. 3b. 3c. but NOT 3d.
Are there any newer Philips DVD players with all 4 options that I want?
In particular with Optical Audio Output?
    Please help.

  3. I do not know about all new Philips DVD players. I have only experience with 5960 model and its up-converter (up-scaler) has very poor quality scaling performance. No way that the Philips 5960 player is good for HDTV. If you looking for good DivX / Ultra-DivX player with good quality up-converter, available in stores near you, and if you do not mind it to be HTIB system then I would recommend to look at JVC TH-C50 or 60. Mentioned above SAMSUNG player (but I can only speak for US model) has some flaws in up-conversion and some owners complaint on “microblocking” exacerbation effect when up-scaler in use. I would recommend test run for all players you would wish to consider before you decide which one is the winner and good for you with all its specs and up-scaled image quality.

  4. The Sony DVP-NS75H DVD Player is recommended by alot of users (check AVS forum) or if you have extra money to spend check the OPPO Digital DV-981HD I think its the best upconverter right now.

So what is the point if he did not say thing about divx ? If he does not need DivX it is only up to him.
I just only shared my thoughts about DVP-NS75H. That's it.
I would better look at Pioneer 490V.

The best DVD player on the planet right now is the Oppo Digital DV-981HD but you do need to use the HDMI output to get all of the benefits.

It is not cheap at $229.00 US Dollars BUT there are many more expensive DVD players out there that in the end are no better if not worse.

Why is the Oppo Digital DV-981HD so good?

    1.) Superior up-conversion with superior deinterlacing and/or IVTC built-in
2.) The best PAL to NTSC conversion (totally blows Philips and others out of the water)
3.) Excellent MPEG-4 support (as good as the Philips but no Ultra DivX on the Oppo)

It also has a lot of other pluses like support for HDCD, SACD and DVD-Audio discs etc.

Just between me and you (and I promise it will be our secret) - Are you working for OPPO?

To be honest with you I don't own an OPPO but I understand how they work and I've talked to people that have one and the fact is they do the best PAL to NTSC right now and that is a number one priority for me as I have many PAL DVD Videos.

If I had the money I would buy one but ... luckily I have an old Cyberhome CH-DVD 500 which actually does a damn impressive job of PAL DVD to NTSC and will have to do for now.

Also I do a lot of PAL DVD to NTSC conversion on the computer and this creates a great image but it would be nice to have an OPPO and not have to worry about doing that and still get a great image.

I guess you could say I am a bit anal LOL

Unfortunately I live in the USA but have a lot of PAL DVD Videos because my movie tastes are "extreme" and so many of the good titles can only be had that way.
