    Hi Mick,

Are you connecting to a front-panel USB as opposed to a jack that is on the back of the machine?

I've seen improper wiring cause this problem.

First thing to do is to try plugging your devices into the jacks on the back of the PC. These jacks are directly on the motherboard. If you still have the problem, then perhaps you've got a really serious driver issue of a defective motherboard.

If the jacks on the rear of the PC work, check the wiring from the motherboard to the front panel jacks. If you've got some of the jumper-style connections in the wrong location or on the wrong pins, you could be causing exactly what you're experiencing.

Some case manufacturers bring out the front-panel jacks as a series of separate pins. These should each be labeled (5v, GND, D+, D-) and the like. These must be meticulously matched pin-by-pin with the corresponding motherboard pins. Otherwise, you run the risk of grounding the 5v supply when a device is plugged in, which could cause what you're experiencing.

Is the Back USB port on the I/O pannel, or is it additional ports that are in the slots. I agree that it may be wired wrong. If they are not wired, then you may have a bad board. I had an ASUS motherboard go bad with the problem being that the USB ports stopped working.
