Freecom external DVD recorder / disk compatibility question

have any of you owned one of these?

I got one for my lap top today and tried to burn a couple of things to some PC line dvd-r disks.

Every job failed with an illegal disk message, i then tried to burn some files onto one of the disks using Ulead and got an error saying it couldnt write to the disk.

I am guessing PC line is crappy, they were given to me not bought but they look cheap.

Any feedback on which disks do work with this machine would be helpful, i think my local shop sells the grey datawrites which have done well for me before on other machines so i might try them.

I have hunted round the freecom site for any firmware updates but none of them have the same ref number as my machine RW16J8.
