  1. I've got a little 7" Mintek portable DVD player that will read .mpg (1 & 2) files burned to any CD/DVD. The viewer of the shows will be my 3yr old and 4yr old daughters. I'm looking to convert stuff into small files so more fit on a given DVD.

Given such a small screen, what resolution, bitrate, etc. could I drop things to that would give me small file sizes and decent quality? Are bitrate and resolution the items that matter most?

This should look OK for the 7 inch screen. It is VCD specs. Good Luck

    1150 kbit/sec MPEG-1
    352 x 240 pixels
    Audio:
    44100 Hz
    224 kbit/sec MPEG-1 Layer2

  3. I did a conversion using the settings above against a 700M Divx DVD Rip. The resulting MPG was around 726M or so. That's still larger than I was hoping for.

Is that about the size you thought it would be? Would I have better luck going against the original DVD?

Try adjusting the 1150 down to 750 or so, Some Videos will look ok with a lower bitrate. You can also change the Audio to 128 instead of 224. Good Luck

  6. I did 4 different formats early this morning and each played and looked fine.

Converting Shrek 2 (3.5G) I was able to get it down to the 480M range and still look pretty good. Actually, I'm hoping to go lower though. Something in the 250M or so range would be great.

I'm using Super C for the conversions. The best size I've reached is 487M with settings of:

    487M - 240x192 br-160
    487M - 240x192 br-576
    537M - 320x240 br-384
    537M - 320x240 br-576

The exact file sizes with changes in bitrate probably indicate something, but I'm not knowledgeable enough in this area to know what they mean. Any takers?
