  1. I have been struggling with this for sometime as I haven't encode anything in a while.

I'm trying to convert a DVD to avi but at a size of 300mb. I've been using Handbrake and setting the resolution pretty low around 450x338 I think. The videos have been coming out fairly well for the filesize and 200 or so bitrate. My question is:

How can I maximize the quality while getting the video around 300mb. I use a two-pass encode so what should I focus on?

    Bitrate or Resolution?

Bitrate determines file size. If file size is a fixed target then so is bitrate. Experiment with resolution settings, vbr, etc.

  3. So if I made the resolution very high with a low rate you would get pixelation correct?

    Yes.

But don't you consider resolution to be a part of overall quality?

AutoGK is pretty good at balancing resolution and file size.

  5. What I am trying to do is maximize the quality yet still arrive at the same 300mb file size.
