Describe the effect in detail. Movie effects are usually done by a process called compositing.

I'm guessing the fades the poster is referring to is known as "wipes" in the film business. You know where the screen dissolves into the next scene. In Star Wars one scene will wipe into the next with a special direction - either left to right or maybe circle in to the center of the screen to reveal the next shot.

I don't really do enough editing to give you suggestions other than vegas which is a big editor program - and expensive from what I gather.

But at least if my guess of your request is this might lead others to suggest more options for you.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

  4. Yep, need more info. My guess is that he's thinking of the opening credit sequences where they seem to fade into the distance. There's a free Vegas plugin for that. Just a guess, though.

The wipes in Star Wars were done optically originally, and are in fact quite difficult to replicate using digital techniques. ILM went to quite some trouble to replicate the look of the original wipes when they were doing the last three films.

The text roll at the start of Stars Wars can easily by done by putting all the text on a long still image file, then rolling it past the camera. The original roll was done using text printed on a long roll of paper which was scrolled past the camera. This is why it isn't as steady as a pure optical effect.

Not sure what you mean. The current version is 7.0b.

To do what you want correctly though, you will be key framing the transitions manually using Even Pan & Crop, not by using any built-in transition.

I was using Vegas 4 or 5 ... to do that sort of thing ... a few years ago.

I was messing with the James Bond 007 movie with Halle Berry and Madonna ... I wanted to put the movie itself and the Madonna Music Video all on one disk.

The store bought version was a 2 disk set and the movie was on Disk 1 and the Madonna music video was on Disk 2.

I got a little carried away ... I started inserting wize crack remarks ... subtitles ... in the scenes where Halle Berry was about to drown in the ice chamber before Bond crashed his car into the wall and saved her. Actually wasn't that hard to add subtitles into the video ... of couse though ... their permanent and can't be removed.

Manono's post talks about the text crawl, which isn't a wipe. Only Yoda's talks about true wipes.

@LacyWest - none of them refer to subtitles, but thanks for playing.

Womble's MPEG-VCR has a bunch of wipes when you join clips, left to right, zooming circles, etc.

I do both the wipes/fades and the shrinking titles with Premiere Pro standard stuff. You can find a tutorial on the shrinking titles on the Wrigley site. It is really quite easy to do with keyframes.

The standard transitions do the rest. You can customize the transitions with keyframes, also.

Check Magix movie edit pro. It cost $60 can do all that you are mentioning and more and on top of that is a lot easier to use than premiere.
    I want to believe....

  15. In the end, what you're truly looking for is an effect called the "Gradient Wipe." This creates wipes/dissolves based on a black and white gradient source.

And since your black/white source can by anything (circles, boxes, a fractal pattern), you can customize it to your heart's desire.

It's available pretty much in all major editors. Final Cut and Premiere definitely have it.
