Free program to replace squibs?

I'm not looking for how to muzzle flashes. That's a pretty easy technique. What I'm looking for is something that can create a squib effect. Some sort of splatter or anything that could be manipulated to resemble blood would be great. And I need something that's free as I have NO money.

Any ideas?

WAX2 or Jahshaka, a graphics program, some animation skill, and some patience. Both WAX2 and Jahshaka are freeware compositing and effects packages that will allow you to overlay an animated blood hit. If you really want splatter then you need a renderer and a fluid dynamics package - none of which are free or even cheap.

At the low budget end you should consider either particlefx or effects lab
