Agreed. Comodo has beaten most payware in firewall tests, and is, in the opinion of most users (including me), the best free utility. At first, it will have to learn what to allow and what to block, so you will initially get lots of annoying messages. But once it learns your system, it's a breeze. Be sure to disable the Windows XP built-in firewall when using any other such utility.

When selecting a firewall, it might be a good idea to check if it conflicts with some other security software, like AntiVirus, antiSpy
A while ago I wanted to buy a certain firewall, but then found out that it cannot work with certain AntiVirus I was using at that time. When I wrote to them they said that security programs often conflict. That's it.
I do not want to name specific programs, because it could well be different now. But it is definitely smth to check.
PC Tools offers both the FW and AntiVirus, so you know they would not conflict.

I use ZoneAlarm (the basic free one)on all 5 of my computers on my LAN. Each is set up for what I use each computer for. I have used it for years with no other firewall or virus software and since I started using it, I have not had any viruses or other bad stuff. Once it learns the settings and programs I allow, it works quietly and I don't have any problems.

  10. Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5 (last freeware version)
    OS: Win98/Me/NT4/2000/XP
Kerio Personal Firewall is a small and easy to use system designed for protecting a personal computer against hacker attacks and data leaks. It is based on the ICSA certified technology used in the WinRoute firewall. The firewall itself runs as a background service, using a special low-level driver loaded into the system kernel. This driver is placed at the lowest possible level above the network hardware drivers. Therefore, it has absolute control over all passing packets and is able to ensure complete protection of the system it is installed on.

scroll down this page to find it. Still works great, low resource use, still bulletproof after all these years:

I used to use ZoneAlarm. I think it was TBoneit who posted about Comodo which I use now. It's not a memory resource hog.
