  1. I received a dvd with some files but I cannot ID what the file is, let alone begin a conversion to Xvid or DivX. The friend sent me the dvd as a strange sort of copy of an original dvd that he made on a, I believe, stand alone DVD recorder. Don't know which brand yet.

The dvd will not open in any of 3 win computers that I own. (What I mean is that windows cannot read the dvd at all....I get a message that no media is present) It will play in a stand alone dvd recorder that also plays Divx/Xvid, etc. The video file appears in a 3.5gig single file on the dvd but does not have a file extension that I can see. I was able to extract the file on a computer using Isobuster. I renamed the file with an mpg extension and it plays in GOM Player, Nero Player, and WMP. However the file will not open in any of my mpeg2 editing programs such as MPEG-VCR or VideoReDo+. VideoReDo+ says only that mpeg1 audio is not allowed. I tried renaming with .avi extension and it will not open. GSpot cannot give any information. GOM Player says it is YV12(Raw), Nero says it is MPEG2. Virtualdubmod will not open the file. And so far I cannot find any way to demux the file...

    Any Ideas much appreciated!!!

It's probably not finalized on the dvd recorder...or just some crappy dvd media.

    Try demux with projectx.

  3. Sorry I posted in the wrong forum.... Wasn't too sure where to post this question.

The file was written by a Coby (Sampo) R-1280. The friend said it was finalized so I have no idea why only Isobuster can see it to extract, and not windows.

I found that I can convert the file to mp4 with Nero Recode, but what can I do with it after that? Is there a program that will go from mp4 to avi?

I will give Project X a try! Thanks.
