    I have been going through the howto's, but I am really new to video editing. What I am trying to figure out is how to take a .vob file and convert it to .m2v. I have downloaded these .vob files and they are NOT part of a DVD. I have nero burning software with the mpeg2 encoder to allow me to create svcd's. I have downloaded .m2v files and I am able to burn them directly with nero, however, it can't read the .vob files for some reason. It will try to encode them, but when finished I get picture with no sound.

    What is the process from going from .vob files to .m2v without having .ifo?

    Thanks!

    Are you sure the .vob contain audio? Play it with a software dvd player.
    Have a look at Sefy's guide, if you convert .vob to .m2v with DVD2AVI and TMPG, you don't need an .ifo file.

    Yes, the .vob contains audio. I was actually sucessful in converting some files in the way that you mention, so thanks! However, I am having another problem. dvd2avi is striping out the audio in .mpa format, and apparently tmpgenc can't read that format. What do I do about that?

    Thanks!

  4. all you need is VSTRIP - it comes with DVD2SVCD kit ..its a little gui prog - it's a 3 stage program 1 load in vobs
    2 read in .ifo 3 save out M2V or vob file(s) quite a tidy program actually .you caneven split the 4gb m2v stream into sizeable parts eg 650mb...when you think about it ..its quite odd , you get convert a movie from vob to m2v stream and chop it up into 650mb m2v files cut them to cd..give them to someone who then copies them back to to hard drive and run the lot from a playlist and all without a dvd rom or set top player
    DVD from CD? ( OK you use the CD s for storage)

    chonl, in DVD2AVI under audio check "decode" only, then you should end with a .wav file.

    Bob-c, I don't have the actual DVD I have downloaded .vob files, so it seems that dvd2svcd will not work for me. I tried it out, but it expects .ifo files, which I do not have.

    Truman, my dvd2avi audio settings are the following:

    Track Number -> Track 1
    Channel Format -> Auto Select
    Dolby Digital -> Decode
    Dolby Digital -> Dynamic Range Control -> Normal
    MPEG Audio -> Demux
    48 -> 44.1KHz -> Off

    With these settings I still get the .mpa file and not the .wav file. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for all the help, this is fun!

    Track 1 seems to be MPEG audio. Figure out how many audio tracks are within the .vob.
    Try to rename .mpa to .mp2.
    If there is only one audio track, try to rename .vob to .mpg.
    Try to convert the audio with BeSweet. You will find BeSweet, BeSweet GUI and a guide at http://www.doom9.org
    If nothing helps, email me a short part of the .mpa file .

    Thanks for all the help but I give up on this vob file. I was able to encode all my other ones, but this one is just not worth the time. I was able to convert the mpa to wav and then encode with tmpgenc, but the resulting mpg would play video for a short amount of time then quit, however, the sound would play on. I just thing it is NOT possible to encode this vob file!

    Again, thanks for all the help, I was able to encode all the rest of my vob files with your help.

  9. I HAVE 2 QUESTIONS FOR BOB-C & TRUMAN. 1ST QUESTION: HOW LONG SHOULD IT TAKE FROM START TO FINISH(RIP TO BURN) TO MAKE A NTSC STANDARD COMPLIANT SUPER VCD USING THE DVD2SVCD BUNDLE? MY COMPUTER SPECS ARE: PENTIUM III 800MHZ, 512MB SDRAM(PC133), 40GB(7200) HD, SONY CD-RW CRX140E, NEC 16X DVD-ROM, WINDOWS ME OS. 2ND QUESTION: LIKE CHONL, I ALSO PURCHASED THE MPEG2 ENCODER FOR NERO 5.5.6.4 AND WOULD LIKE TO SUBSTITUTE IT FOR THE CINEMA CRAFT ENCODER 2.5 WHICH NORMALLY IS USED IN THE DVD2SVCD KIT. CAN THIS BE DONE? HOW SO?

    First off there is no need to type in caps.
    It isn't that easy to say how long it takes. If you just convert without Avisynth filters and in CBR, it should take about 4-5 hours for a 2 hour movie. If you use 3pass VBR it takes 4 times as long. Every Avisynth filter will slow down the process. Use bicubic resize, temporal smoother and spatial soften, then it may take a day or more.
    The only encoder, that work with DVD2SVCD is CCE SP 2.50.
