I am converting 640 x 480 avi file to 352 x 240 mpeg1 using Tmpgenc Plus. I did a batch encode and on all of the outputs, the sound dies at about 6 seconds into the video.

Any idea what might have gone wrong?

You made the video so small the audio no longer has room to fit ?

Honestly, you haven't provided enough information to even make a decent guess.

What type of audio was in the original avis ?
What encoder settings did you use ?

Well i tried making different clips of 720x480, 704x480, 352x240 and they all lost audio at the same point of the video.

the audio is layer-2 48hz 192kbp (Im not sure if this answers the question of what type of audio. Im not sure where to find that)

the encoder I used was Tmpgenc Plus 2.5

That sounds like the output format. Use avicodec or G-Spot on the original avi file to find out what the source audio is. Chances are it is either a format that tmpgenc doesn't like (VBR MP3, for instance), or it is corrupt in some way.

Is there any other software I can use to just convert the avi to mpeg with freedom to change output resolution. The avi is already 48hz so I dont need to change it.

MP3 doesn't mean much. It's the details about it that could. Is it CBR or VBR ?

tmpgenc is a good encoder. More than adequate for VCD encoding, which is effectively what you are doing.

Personally, I would use virtualdubmod to save an uncompressed wav version of the audio track, and convert this to AC3 seperately (i prefer it to mp2 for compatability), then bring the two together during authoring.

hmm i think i have virtualdub installed.

So what I do is extract a .wav file from each of the source avi and use that as audio source during the authoring correct?

    ffmpeggui can do this.

What do you author with ? Chances are you rauthoring program will convert wav to mp2 or optionally AC3 (I say optionally because commercial AC3 encoders need to be licensed, and so are sometimes extras)
