  1. Hi,

I have an LG DN100H and am trying to get subs working.
I created a folder on a DVD+RW and put 2 .avi files in it as well as 2 .idx and .sub files.

When I play the dvd I cannot get the unit to see any subtitles at all.

Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

    Floob.

    and they are named like video.avi video.idx video.sub ?
and you tried press the subtitle button some times?

or maybe it doesn't support sub/idx image subtitles. You can try Sub2DivX and make a .divx(you can rename it to avi and it will also probably work fine) with built in subs from the sub/idx.

...or OCR the sub/idx'es to .srt with subrip if your player (like mine) only supports .srt subtitles.

That sounds possible - although the manual says it supports srt/smi/sub

hmm, although it does say sub/txt - so does this mean I should rename the idx to txt?

All my files are named the same, so I dont think thats the prob. And I would like to keep the subs and movie files separate.

Nope. There are 2 .sub subtitle formats, one text based .sub (you can open it in notepad and read it), and one image based (can't be read as text), that comes together with a .idx file. Obviously your player supports the former, not the latter.

Ah - I see thanks. For clarification I'll type what the manual says.

    Code:
    Playable Subtitle Format
    SubRip(*.srt/*.txt)
    SAMI(*.smi)
    SubStation Alpha(*.ssa/*.txt)
    MicroDVD(*.sub/*.txt)
    SubViewer 1.0(*.sub)
    SubViewer 2.0 (*.sub/*.txt)
    TMPlayer(*.txt)
So does this mean that if I receive the sub/idx files there is no point me using then, and I should find a site that offers me sub/txt combination? (I guess I cant convert sub/idx to sub/txt?)

    Thanks

    Floob.

No, not for your standalone player.

Yes, even if .srt is the most common text based subtitle format.

No, but you can convert it to .srt with SubRip

  8. And if you can't find the subs for your movie in SRT format, then OCR the ones you have in IDX/SUB format, to SRT. Takes only 10-15 minutes.

Edit: mats edited his, to make mine redundant.

I own a dvp720sa (Philips), and I recently found out that it can read idx/sub subtitles.
and maybe your standalone can too.
[it works, but the colors are off, I'll explain why later]
there is a condition, though, for this to work: you must put, in the same folder as the movie and the subs, an ifo file. something like this:
    moviename.avi
    moviename.idx
    moviename.ifo
    moviename.sub

the presence of the ifo file is mandatory. (take the one associated with the movie in the VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD)
try it out and let me know if it works for you

now for the bad news: I think the hexa values are RGB, while the standalone players seem to use YUV for idx/sub files associated with divx files.
why RGB for DVD and YUV for divx is mind boggling to me

What's boggling to me, is how an IFO (a Video DVD related file) can have anything to do with the playback of not Video DVD related files?!? Weird indeed!

You can use avisub or sub2divx to mux sub to avi

Unfortunately, the standalone support for internal (muxed) subtitles is rather limited, compared to external.
