  1. I've been wanting to replace an old system I have and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a reasonably priced 5.1 system. I have some fairly good 6 ohm speakers already and could possibly get by with just the receiver. Don't need anything fancy, just something to play my tv through. Radio, dvd, cd, etc. is not really wanted. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Although I've never owned myself, I've got a number of friends that swear by Yamaha. They should have something to fit most budgets.

I have an older Sony 5.1 system that I love. Its worked perfectly for years now. And I tend to crank it up once in awhile and no problems. Mines an 80watt per channel system and when I bought it new it was $200. A very good price. You could probably get a 6.1 system in that range in an offbrand at least.

BUT I'd recommend staying with the big boys for the amplifier since you don't want to have to replace it every few years. SONY, PIONEER, YAMAHA, ETC....

Set your budget and your desired sound fields and go for it. REMEMBER you need more than 6 speakers if you get a 6.1 system or higher - that will add to the cost if you don't already have plenty of quality speakers to use.

OH and also - make sure you get one with HDMI capabilities should you get a hdtv system in the future. Otherwise you'll probably end up buying a new system when you wouldn't need to if you shop wisely now.
