In the same way that you have different softwares which can record any audio that comes through a soundcard, are any softwares or options that will allow you record any video that comes acorss your screen?

Video is a little more complicated than audio. The solution really depends on what you want to record. There is plenty of software to record the display as a movie, often including any video that is playing. However this is not usually the best solution if what you are after is something like streaming video. In that case there are plenty of dedicated solutions, from software to ferret out the links and download the files, to plugins for browsers to do similar tasks. And as frustrating as it seems to be for many, there is no universal solution. As there are many different types of video, so there a often many different solutions required to cover them all.

If you can be more specific as to your needs, we might be able to be more specific as to solutions.

I like the unplug plugin for firefox. In this case it wasn't able to find the link, but could find the source youtube page, and from there find the direct link.

Yes. You go to the site and start the video playing. You right-click on the page and select Unplug from the popup menu. Unplug presents a page of links, showing you the most likely to have your video. Some sites, like google video, might also have links to avi and mp4 versions in the background. Unplug shows them all, and you download the one you want.

Two other good candidates are greasemonkey and the video download script, and VideoDownloader, and seperate plugin. Unplug is by far the easiest, and most comprehensive.

Went to the page, right-click but don't see an "unplug" option, is this because I am using IE and not Firefox?

Yes. Ditch IE. Use FireFox as your main browser. It is safer, smarter, and has a host of clever plugins like Unplug that IE can only dream of having. I have IE in the background for a (thankfully) few sites that just don't work with FF.

Have you installed the unplug plugin from the mozilla's extensions site ? Go to Tools->Extensions, then click on Get More Extensions. It will open a page and you search there

@guns1inger, have you tried the IE Tab extension?

Unplug link is https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2254/ but the site seems slow as I tried getting FasterFox but it timed out for me

another way is that the Youtube video ID's are in the links on that site so you could just copy that and paste the ID and add it to http://youtube.com/watch?v=

another daft way would be to save the page and then edit it with Notepad

just press CTRL+H and find /credit.php?vid= and replace it with http://youtube.com/watch?v= then save the page. Open the page and all the links are now Youtube ones instead

p.s. can you tell I'm bored?

I use open in IE instead.

YouTube is actually one of the easiest to download from. Unplug covers a very wide range of sites.
