When I try burning a DVD ISO or an authored DVD movie, my drive takes anywhere from 35-60 minutes to burn a single 4.7gb disc! I am using 16x speed Verbatim DVD-Rs and burning at max speed. The software I've tried is Nero Ultimate 7 and Roxio Creator 8 Suite and both are equally poor in burn time. What's wrong?

    Thanks!

I had similar problems before. Then I unplugged all cables and set everything to Cable Select mode : hard disks and dvd drives.

I changed the DVD drive to another IDE controller

Even now if I insert media in both my DVD-RW drive and DVD-R drive...my PC slows down 50%

    is my defective board

Hi, Check to see if the DMA has been enabled....

    Right click MY COMPUTER...
    Goto HARDWARE>>>>>>>DEVICE MANAGER
    Click on IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS.
Right click on PRIMARY CHANNEL>>>>>PROPERTIES>>ADVANCED SETTINGS...
Check if TRANSFER MODE is set to DMA IF AVAILABLE.
Do that for DEVICE 0 and DEVICE 1.
Goto to SECONDARY IDE Channel and do the same....

    Reboot computer and try again..

    Good Luck...

thanks for your input - I've tried what you've suggested (it was enabled), so now I'm trying this out: http://winhlp.com/WxDMA.htm (source: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1574764#1574764)

I don't need to burn anything right away and I don't want to waste potentially an hour of my time waiting to figure out whether it worked :P so I'm going to try to hunt down something I needed to burn anyway in the next few hours

    thanks again

And if DMA IF AVAILABLE is greyed out, then delete the Primary and Secondary channels, and reboot to let Windows re-install them.
Then the DMA IF AVAILABLE should be usable. Select it, and reboot again.

I have this problem on one computer, cannot burn faster than 4x. If I try 8x-16x, the burn takes 30 minutes (longer than 4x!). The POS VIA motherboard is the culprit. I just need to trash it sometime.
