I chose Pioneer 111D which I cross flashed to 111L after reading all reviews and many user reported problems at cdfreaks. The Pioneer seemed tp have fewer user problems as well as being best over all in cdfreaks reviews. The only knock against the Pioneer IMO is that it's not a good scanner, but that's much less important to me than quality burns which is main reason most get a burner anyway.

Have an NEC ND-3550A and it's awesome. If I flash with the Liggy's Bitsetting Firmware 1.06, it'll bitset single-layer +Rs as well as the DLs it already does.

I have a Pioneer 111D and the new Samsung 18X drive. This also makes the 4th or 5th Pioneer I have had over the Years. I like the Pioneer's. Just my 2 cents..

    I have a Pioneer 111D and a Lite-ON SHW-160P6S.

I use the Pioneer to burn DVD-R and DVD+R DL. The burner automatically bitsets the double layer discs to DVD-ROM.

I use the Lite-ON to rip the movies (ripping speeds are higher than on the Pioneer) and to have a drive that works with KProbe scanner. Since the Pioneer doesn't have DVD+R bitsetting to DVD-ROM, I'd use the Lite-On to burn those.

The Pioneer 111D can bitset DVD+R media to dvd-rom by crossflashing the drive with the "Dangerous Brother's firmware 111L 8.19* internal firmware and 111L 8.26 internal firmware. Flashing with 3rd party firmware will void the Pioneer warranty.

BENQ 1650/1655 is also another good drive to consider but it's getting scarce to find so the Pioneer 111D would be good choice too.

I find LG drives to be extremely tolerant of many brands of blank media.

If you check the DVD media lists you will find that very few of the complaints of "bad media" are from LG owners.

I have had no problems with my Benq's. You don't have to void the warrantee to bitset, as the Benq can be set to bitset. I have had no problems with media, although, I stay with store purchased blanks from Japan. I am now using Sony DVD+Rs from Japan with no problems.
