  1. O.k., I'm sorry of this info is right in front of me but......

My question is this: how do edit or extract a section of video out of a VIDEO_TS file?

For example, if I DVR an hour show or have a DVD with only say the middle 20 minutes of interest to me, how do I edit this?

Again, I am sorry if this info is here in the forum but I just don't know where to start - I'm actually not sure what all the files in a VIDEO_TS folder do!

I've edited audio before (easy) but video? Oooooh, this might be a challenge.

    Thank you!
    THANK YOU!

Three applications that do this are Cinematize, MPEG Streamclip and PixeVRF Browser. Each allows you to trim segments from the MPEG video that's contained in the VIDEO_TS folder. You then will need an MPEG-friendly DVD authoring application such as Toast to author a new VIDEO_TS folder from the edited MPEGs if you want them on a video DVD.

I did it once, extracting just the wild last play from this year's Alamo
Bowl. I used Toast 7 to convert the DVD (copied from TV) into QuickTime.
QT Pro has a real easy way to cut out what you don't like. Then I used
Toast to burn the "extract" QT file as a video DVD.

  4. Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it.

What "size" was the file when you cut it in QT? - again, showing my lack of terminology, what I mean is was the picture size the same as when you originally recorded it?

What happens to quality going from DVD-->QT-->DVD?

    Thanks again!

What size was the original file? Doesn't that assume I was sober enough to notice?

Sorry, that end-game was such a hoot I didn't log the size.

Yup, quality was the same. Ain't computers great?[/u]

  6. Is the QT feature only in Toast 7? I have 6 but can't find that feature. Hmmm.......

In Toast 6 select the DVD Video option in the Video window (not DVD Video from VIDEO_TS). Drag in your VIDEO_TS folder. You'll likely get a message that some files didn't import and that is normal. Now select the video you want to convert. Click the Export button at the bottom. After you choose a save location Toast will convert the video to DV format which can be edited in QuickTime Pro. This is a lot of time and work compared with using an application that trims MPEGs (as I mentioned earlier).

  8. Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to Mac. I tried this using YadeX (where I got an "unknown error" but it seemed to rip the DVD into one .vob file) but when I tried to use Streamclip, I got a message that because I didn't have the QuickTime MPEG-2 codec, it wouldn't work.

Is there any program that edits MPEGs for the Mac that doesn't make you buy the QuickTime codec? I don't know a lot about Macs but I've done elementary editing on a PC. I WOULD do this on the PC, but I can't find a way to edit a VIDEO_TS folder where the resulting product doesn't end up looking like crap.

    Perhaps Hawkeye?
not too sure, but if you want to do it without
much headache, you should invest in purchasing
the MPEG-2 component. It also comes
bundled with Final Cut Studio, and IIRC, Final Cut Express.
