  1. These are really a few questions:
    1) after capturing / editing, etc... can Windows MovieMaker (WMM) create a VIDEO_TS folder ?
    2) can I add chapters / menu with WMM ?
    3) can WMM burn VIDEO_TS to DVD ?

I did view the tutorials, and nothing in there say about chapters/menu, or authoring DVD.

  3. Thanks for the confirmation, that's what I thought as the tutorial mentions nothing about those features.
So why WMM received such a great rating ? Just curious.
And by the way, PS8 cannot even open the DV-AVI file captured by WMM.
I just switch back to my old PS8 that does everything I need.

No. It is mainly an editing package for wmv video which is not directly authorable to dvd. You can output to dv avi with an appropriate codec but that would still have to be converted to mpg before authoring.

Try dvdauthorgui for a free authoring programs. All the pay authoring programs found in the tools section on the left <---- have trial periods to test them.

Windows movie maker is excellent for producing videos for web distribution but should not be used for dvd creation unless you go to higher quality dv avi codecs for later conversion to mpg.

  5. Thanks for the clarification, I already bought Pinnacle Studio 8 software a few years ago and was using it for video editing and authoring work. Since I just bought a newer PC (with WinXP in it) to replace the older one (with Windows 2000), I just try MovieMaker that come with WinXP and see how that works. The user interface is quite easy to follow, so in less than a minute I was able to start capture to DV format. Only to discover later that it cannot author DVD !!!
Then I install PS8 and NeoDVD+ (which I also bought 3 years ago) on my new PC, both of them do not recognize the AVI file captured by MovieMaker !!!. I have to use PS8 to re-capture again, and made a DVD out of my new video in no time as I am very fluent with these two software.

Now I realize that MovieMaker good for making video to be viewed on the PC.

  6. Use TMPGenc encoder to convert the avi to DVD video first, then author it with TMPGenc DVDauthor.

DVD requires MPeg2 encoding and authoring to VOB, IFO, BUP.

WMM2 does none of these. MPeg2 encoding requires license payment that would burden the price of Windows XP. WMM2 will import MPeg and other formats but not encode. The WMM2 website directs you to compatible MPeg2 encoders for $.

WMM2 is a solution if you want wmv encoding. If you combine it with the free Windows Media encoder it is a full solution for that. It will also output to DV-AVI if you want to pass the editing result to a higher end program. But it won't encode MPeg2 or author a DVD.

Just a quick note - I think Windows Movie Maker outputs Avi Type 1, and some NLE video editors only recognise Type 2, so you might have to convert the avi to Type 2.
I've used DvDate http://paul.glagla.free.fr/index_en.htm freeware to do this, and I'm sure there are lots of other tools that will do it as well.
