DV Artifacts removal

Dear Brothers,

Is there any method to remove INVISIBLE noise/grain/artifacts from DV video just to make the video more easy and efficient for the mpeg encoder (as mpeg encoding is efficient on cleaner videos).

The source is assumed to be clean and clear for the EYES.

Reasons are

1. I have too much belief on the limitations of human eye.
2. DV is a compressed format - so may not be very perfect.
3. Learnt from net that some (or many) camcorders create video noise.
4. Commercial DVD's are encoded with low bitrate, but are very crisp and clear - maybe
the source is very clean. DV encoded with such bitrates does not product similar result
(assuming the trial version of cce is same as the original version + watermark)
5. Strongly believe that none of any electrical appliances are 100% perfect.

What about the Dynamic Noise Reduction filter in VirtualDub? If you set the threshold to 6 or 8 it should make a difference without being noticeable. Use it on your finished edited video and frameserve to the MPG Encoder or save the video to an AVI that is uncompressed or uses the HUFFYUV codec to avoid any further noise being added from compression before going to MPG. .

The main difference is quality of the source, and the steps taken to maintain it throughout the process.

H'wood films go through this process (or similar):

Shoot Hirez film (~=4k)-->DigitizeScanner-->4k or 2k rez ~uncompressed digital file-->Edit/Compositing/SFX-->4k or 2k rez ~uncompressed digital file-->Encode to MPEG2-->Author and Master disc.

Note also: film would use BetterLighting/Filtering, Tripod/Steadicam for MuchSmoother or MuchMoreStill shots, and after edit, would do a pass of color correction & noise reduction/cleaning (sometimes part of the encoding process).

Shooting DV goes through this process (AT BEST):

Shoot DV (SD rez) compressed at 5.5:1-->edit (hopefully not losing generation), + compositing/SFX/Color correction (WILL lose a generation)-->encode to MPEG2-->Author & Burn.

Film is progressive, DV usually isn't. Film is at 24fps (more bitrate efficient), DV usually isn't.

With Tripod/Steadicam, Film has "predictable" motion, DV usually doesn't (much less efficient in B/P frames). With BetterLighting/Filtering & NoiseReduction, Film forces the final MPEG encoding to be optimized for what the director wants to be shown, DV usually doesn't.

Yes, DV is compressed, but it uses a compression based on how the human eye works, and is VERY SIMILAR to MPEG compression, so there is only a small loss from multiple generations. It's all those other things that make it less optimal.
