Hi, i have a samsung sd-612 dvd-rom running on windows me. It's pretty old, anyway this is weird, commercial dvds play fine, no problems. But dvd-r won't play at all, the rom will lock up the computer and won't unlock unless i eject the disk. It tries to spin but stops.

How can it play rented dvds perfectly but won't work with burned dvd-rs? They both are dvd
format, right? Could it be the media? I'm recording with a Toshiba d-rw-2 on sony dvd-r media.
The recorded dvd works fine on other dvd players.

    Someone please help.

This usually happens because the firmware in the DVD-ROM drive is very old.

Try upgrading its firmware. Get new firmwares for your drive in here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=1&manufactor=28

ome older drivers will not read DVD-burner media that do not have the book type set to DVD-ROM.

The book type for DVD-R/RW cannot be change to DVD-ROM

Only book type for DVD+R/RW can be changed. Chances are that if you burn a DVD+R with book type set to DVD-ROM, you drive wil understand it.

If you cannot write DVD+R with book type set to DVD-ROM, change your drive.

I think you're right about that. I decided to go on and buy a new one.

    Thanks for your help.
