Buy nothing.
Keep DVD Shrink for transcoding.
The "decoder" you refer to is ripping. Simpy use a better ripping tool, like DVD Fab Decrypter.
Use two programs. DVD Shrink and other transcoders have NEVER had top-of-the-line ripping abilities. For that, you need special ripping software.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

...or get AnyDVD to use (again) in conjunction with DVDShrink.
Updated (pretty much) in step with DVDFab Decrypter but isn't freeware, if you feel you have to spend some money on this.

ripit4me will rip with DVD Decrypter after creating the necessary PSL files as required, run it through FixVTS to ennsure the structure is sound, and load it into DVD Shrink ready to go. What more could you want for free ?

DVDShrink is still excellent at transcoding and dont need updating as it does what its supposed to do very well.If it was to be updated,it would probably be able to bypass newer protections and fix a few minor bugs, buts that all.
Nero Recode is reported by some to run faster and gets updated,so if you want updates use recode instead.
For ripping I use DVDDecrypter (No longer updated but is the best) and AnyDVD because its always updated and simply runs in the background with the ability to remove CD Copy Protection as well as DVD protections.AnyDVD is a tool worth paying for Imo.
But as lordsmurf mentioned,DVDFab Decrypter and DVDShrink are free,no money out your pocket and do the job to the best of standards with great ease.
If your DVD is clean and unscratched then DVDShrink will rip it fine.I sometimes use it to rip from a DVD,removing any crap I dont want and transcoding.~Luke~ -
If you want to buy a software then consider DVD REBUILDER PRO. I think it cost $30.00 and you can use the trial version of CINEMA CRAFT ENCODER as well as other free video encoders that is bundled with the software. DVDRB encodes the video content where DVDSHRINK only transcodes video. DVDRB takes longer to process compared to DVDSHRINK but the video quailty is far better than DVDSHRINK. Use DVDFAB DECRYPTER to rip the files to your hd then use DVDRB PRO.

DVDFabDecryptor to rip large/protected DVDs; FixVTS for problematic ones; DVD Decryptor whenever you can (lesser protections, rip to ISOs); DVD Shrink on 80% or greater quality transcodes; DVDRebuilder Pro (Free version is still available) on big jobs (plan to leave your computer alone for a few hours).

ripit4me is really the way to go, as guns1inger suggested. DVDFabDecryptor works, no doubt about it, but it leaves all the junk in the video file that was used to create bad sectors. Most likely this won't be a problem for you when using DVDShrink, but I wouldn't say it's a 100% sure thing. ripit4me can intelligently get rid of the junk for you.
I like DVDRebuilder and even thought about buying the Pro version, but I can't figure out how to do so unless you have to register for the site first, which I've never done. -
Thank you very much for the answers. Iīll try solutions from the top of the tree and see whats best. Iīll start with DVDfab decrypter and DVDshrink (it runs for now).
Iīm impressed that its for free. I have run DVDshrink the last too years and i like all it can. The only thing iám missing is to copy one disc to too disc. And the missing update of decrypter.
Iīll report what i will use for the future.
Thanks again from Sweden -

While "copy protections" and rippers continue to develop, transcoding has basically stayed the same for some time.
Most rippers do not transcode - DVDDecrypter and DVDFab Decrypter most notably.
