There is a big chance he uses a normal VHS machine which has no S-Video output.
That cable then will not work correctly with a TV-Card.

For a normal VHS machine SCART to RCA/CINCH (Composite) is needed.

  6. Haupaauage pvr250/350. I've tried ati/canoppis advc300/mvr1000.

The haupaauge is amazing,so many patches for it, see
http://www.shspvr.com/smf/, if your system is up to it, mpeg hardware capturing.

If not may be a dv capture box and the time spent transcoding to mpeg using Tmpgenc.

Thats my experience after nearly 3 years trial and error.

    Good luck
