It will be more comprerhensive to talk about a complete audio/video DREAM setup. A single component can't define the state of the art.

What if I play a 1080i video in a 1080p TV? -
Lots of nice CRTs still.

no - it would be a Sony KD34XBR960, which has the super fine pitch CRT, this years models dropped that feature and also cost more oddly enough ..
The 955 also is good ....
as for LCD's - the Sony's KDL46V2500 and the Sharp LC57D90U look Good with HD sources ----"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
pioneer converts 480i-1080i to 1080p in all their Elite line (some are not 1080p final display and then are down res.) ... the results are stunning -- no one comes close ...

I read in the Pioneer site that Plasma TV's are not short lived anymore, withstanding now over 60000 hours of brightness.

As far as which TV today produces the best picture I'll stick with CRT.

there is always something better - but the question i think was what was good today ....
By the time SED is completly rolled out (1 -2 years at best) and prices fall ... im sure there will be something even better ....
it does look like good tech ..... but until it goes on sale , it is not available , period ... (witness the ps3 delays as well as blu-ray delays)"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Laser TV looks promising.

Anyone buying a large screen hdtv and not getting it properly calibrated is not getting the best out of the telly. This includes having black level adjusted. It makes an amazing difference.

Why is it that HDTV's don't come calibrated from factory?

for full calibration - you will need a calibrator device as well as the service codes
that is why ISF Techs charge about 400$ to do it
the pioneer elite monitors include this service"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I read in the Pioneer site that there are "HD Elite TV's" and "HD Elite Monitors". The one you mentioned is under the "Monitor" category. But both are Plasma HD TV's, so why do they use the "Monitor" distinction?

no tuner built in
