  1. Ok this is the deal. I went to sleep one night and shut down my computer. next morning went to turn it on and everything starts up, fans and all lights but nothing on the monitor. its not the video card or the monitor. im thinking its the motherboard, but before i go out and buy a new motherboard i would see if anyone had any ideas.
    thank you, Scott.

Can you the normal boot up sounds? the hard drive grinding to life? the floppy drive being accessed(if you have one)? Other applicable sounds? One sure way to test this if the sounds are not apparent is to open your optical drives tray and leave it open. Shut down the system however you want making sure the tray remains open. If upon boot up with 30 seconds the tray closes your motherboard is fine and your computer is nearing the end of it's POST and is probably booting the OS but because of a bad video card you are not seeing this.

I have experienced this sort of behaviour a few times with my old computer. Most of the times it helped to unplug VGA cable from display adapter, wait for a few minutes, plug the cable back in.

The problem may also be in your MB condensators. If thats the case, unplug power cable, press power button a few times, plug in the cable and try to start again.

Friday or Saturday... rebooted my PC... went though post... windows XP startup screen (the one with the Night Rider scroll on the bottom) and before it went to the welcome screen, blank screen with no lights on the keyboard (cap locks, etc).

After several reboots with the same thing... I tried 'repairing' XP ... scan disc... no good. I had just gotten a new 400 gig Sata drive, so I reloaded Xp on it and later copied my old c: drive (minus windows and programs dirs) to my new huge drive. To my dissmay my profile was empty and I had to use an undelete program to get back 99% of it.

It will be very hard to defend your rights, when you don't have any.

It's very unlikely there's anything really wrong with your computer ... it is clearly a problem with a messed up Windows system. Reinstalling from scratch would certainly bring the computer back alive, but there might be easier way to do it

  7. Make sure monitor is ok, if you have a 2nd computer test the monitor. Then if all were the same pull out everything except video card and ram see if computer posts, if you have a 2nd computer try swapping video card too, if nothing it is the motherboard. Assuming power supply is ok. The most failure in computer is power supply and HD. Good luck
