    Hey ya'll

I was burning a movie on Nero and my computer switched off. It has done this about 5 times now and each time i love around 3 gig of HD space. It seems to only switch off if i burn when i have less then 5 GB of space and when it switches off its like the comp turns off but i canstill hear it running. I then have to unplug it from the power suply then restart it up.

Where will the burned files be getting saved to when my comp switches itself off?

    thanks

check all your temp files. probably the one in c:/docs and settings/ *user's name*/local settings/temp it's a hidden directory so you will need to go into tools/folder options/views and check that view hidden files is enabled.

  3. Well, alllll righty, then.

If you can "still hear it running" then it would be distinctly UNLIKE "it switches off". Since you are burning something close to 4 GB (perhaps more?), and you only have 5 GB free, it would not take a rocket scientist to guess that the program is making temporary files which consume more than the available amount of HD space, causing the program to freeze.

By continuing to beat the PC into this brick wall, and killing it by shutting down the power, FIVE TIMES, you are running a great risk of massive file corruption.

Clear some space on the HD. STOP doing what you have been doing.

And for crying out loud, try giving some precise, useful, descriptive information on WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!

Assuming these are DVDs, do a search with windows explorer for *.vob and see what turns up. It does sound like you are running very short of space, which will cause you problems, but should not cause your machine power off.

I would suggest you try burning with Imgburn instead. This will tell you if the problem is related to Nero at all. If it works, consider uninstalling Nero, which will free up a lot of HDD space as well.

I have only started recently having this problem. For the past 2 years i have only had around 5-6 GB free on my system.

I am burning a WMP file to DVD (around 700mp) and it says on Nero i need at least 4.7GB free (which i have)

I have looked everywhere, done searches and can't find the files. Anyone know where else i canlook?

the files could be in lost clusters since you have been yanking the plug. try right clicking the drive icon, properties/tools/error checking. click check now, put a check in both boxes and click ok. if it needs to reboot do it.

Well I'd do as suggested by guns, consider gettin rid of Ner0 free up HDD space, and use IMGBurn..If it still as you claim "powers off" , maybe you've got a heat related issue, open up the case and blow some air through it....But yeah I'd definitely free up some HDD space...

  8. AT LEAST does not mean "This amount and no more". Nero is converting your file, which it does very, very badly BTW, and in the course of this conversion it is requiring more space than you have available.

You have done this before? You have converted THIS PARTICULAR file with success, with the EXACT amount of space that you have now, with THIS version of Nero, and it worked? Betcha a dollar you didn't.

Sure it should give an error msg, but you sure as hell have gotten an indication of a certainty of failure, 5 out of 5.

Maybe it's just me, but when a program upchucks during a file conversion, with no evidence that the file conversion has successfully completed, and in fact good reason to believe that the file conversion has NOT completed successfully, I don't waste 2 seconds of my time trying to find the files that probably don't exist and probably aren't valid. It said it would need to make a 4.7 Gb file and you are only missing 3 Gb, doesn't that tell you something?

Use a different converter, use a different burner, make some more space, and defrag, as well.

    Follow up

Before the burn i had around 5.5 GB in free space. I then did the burn and my comp went off. I then restarted the computer, and then i checked my HD Space and had only 2.5 GB in free space. I then deleted files that took up around 5 GB so thats around 7.5 GB free.

I then remembered CCleaner and downloaded this, i just ran it on my pc and now have 39 GB free (22 GB back when lost Burns)

Good work. The old rule of thumb (from VCDHelp days) was to have twice the amount of free space on the HDD as you were going to burn - to prevent going through what you just have.
