    Just wondering...
How often do your standalone DVD recorders produce faulty recordings? I have only had a handful of these, and I'm trying to determine if the problem is the recorder, the media, or something else.
The few bad recordings I'm thinking of usually had the same characteristics: a small portion of the recording (usually a minute or less) would suddenly seem to skip. The example I'm thinking of involved a recording of a football game on a DVD+RW. The disc was playing fine, but then, when the quarterback went to pass, the disc seemed to freeze. A second later, the next image and sound was of the ball midair. The next image and sound was after the receiver had just caught the pass. Things continued in this choppy manner for a little while (less than a minute), then the rest of the disc seemed to play fine.
Once or twice I re-recorded over what I thought was the same spot on the disc, and had no problems with the resulting video. (By the way, is it possible to record directly over the same "spot" on a DVD+RW, as you can record over the same "spot" on a VHS tape?)
Just trying to determine if these problems are due to the recorder, the media, or something else.
    Thanks,
    Chris

I think the most common reply would be the media. Maybe something as harmless as a speck of dust to full out non compatible brand of disc.
I've never had a faulty one from a couple of pioneers (220 & 640h). I've only made a few dozen though. I also stick with 1x to 8x compatible Taiyo Yuden grade A media.
Some Verbatim -RWs I've used several times have all worked fine and w/o error (so far) even though the media code is Ritek. Not to say there's anything wrong with Ritek.

You didn't mention your brands of HW or SW so just guessing here.
I do think 90% or more of the problems had could be solved by using only highly rated media. Grade A or Class A or whatever the standard one uses.
Out of habit I also look at the dye side for dust specks before inserting. Rare coming from a cake box but it does sometimes occur.
If happening with the same media brand or code I would for sure try another and see what happens.
    Good luck,
    NL
