You could try doing a system restore to a date before you cleaned the computer. If no luck, you would have to go to User Accounts and create a new account as a administrator, unless your old account is still there. Control Panel>User Accounts.

For your bookmarks. In the future you might want to export a copy to disc or floppy to back them up in case you have a similar problem again.

All the files may still be 'somewhere', but outside of the registry, I'm not sure where to look.

  3. Don't panic! I'll bet you can recover pretty much everything.

First, you're using XP, correct? If so, when you log in with your temp profile, open the C: drive but first open My Computer, then select Tools>Folder Options and the View tab, and set the radio button under "Hidden files and folders" to "Show hidden files and folders.

Then, browse the "Documents and Settings" folder. Your original profile is in there somewhere, name is the same as your login name. If you've got XP set so it doesn't ask for a login name, then there may be a profile named "Administrator," which might be it, but I'm guessing there'll be a profile folder with something resembling your name on it.

Open your "dead" profile folder, and inside will be a bunch of subfolders that should contain pretty much all your missing files -- check the "Desktop" folder, also the "My Documents" or "[profile name] Documents" folder. Your Firefox bookmarks will be in a subfolder -- open the folder "Application Data" (it's a hidden folder, which is why you have to enable viewing hidden files and folders), then inside that drill down to Mozilla>Firefox>Profiles and inside that should be one folder with a name like "37zy3dr.default" or like that. Whatever it's called, open that folder, and inside will be a file "bookmarks.html." That's your Firefox booksmarks file.

So start with the above and see how lost or found you get, and let us know when you're in so we can walk through recovering your stuff. Whenever profiles get corrupted I find it's easier just to copy the critical data from that profile into a new profile/username than to spend much time chasing down what broke.

Oh, and you should create a new admin level user and move your stuff there. Ever created a new user? If not, just go to Control Panel>User Accounts and the wizard will walk you through it. Create a new user and then logout/login under that user, and copy the stuff from your old profile to the new one.

Then backup everything because who knows what caused your profile corruption in the first place!

ditto what redwudz said. This happened to me earlier this year after I tried to update firefox. I had to create a new id with admin rights. Lost my bookmarks but I didn't lose any data.
