The long and short of it is similar in approach to the leap from vhs to dvd. Going from analog tv to hdtv is a truly amazing experience.
I've only done it on a pc basis but am still impressed. Sports especially. The clarity is super sharp. No ghosting, no warping, if you get a decent signal its all or nothing - perfect picture or no picture, nothing in between. Though thats only for Over the air antenna reception - you can get high def cable or satellite and have a constant signal.
Plus some channels have 5.1 but many are still stereo only - depends on the broadcaster.
But yes there are many guides available online to give you the technical details.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Did a bit of searching. For over the air HDTV broadcast, the cheapest set top box I can find is this $99 model.

I could not find the shopping/auction link, but I found this on AVS forum :
I just purchased the Sylvania 6900DTE as-is... as the final display unit from Fry's Electronics for $150. It came without packaging or documentation... but with the remote plus a six foot DVI cable that was on the shelf near the STB.
This is another one at $159.00 : http://www.epvision.com/?gclid=CNGh4-HQlIcCFRAMHgodmk5CvA -
