  1. can someone help, i'm using virtualdub to convert mpegs into Divx. But when i go to convert a dialog box pops up saying "I'm trying to use a hacked driver" - when i try to continue virtualdub crashes. The codec is DivX - which i donwloaded from this site...

Does anyone know what i can do to solve this problem, or is there another divx codec i can donwload ?

For me Vdub used to crash, when I tried to convert both video (divx) and audio (mp3) in one step. I never had any other problems with DivX conversion (codec 3.11alpha). Don't care about the message.

Here you go, the best avi encoding / converting method:

    DivX .avi Encoding Using VirtualDub

These settings / Procedure will also work greatly for any .avi or source clip to DivX .avi compressions.

    1. Make sure that you have installed both the DivX Codec and VirtualDub
    2. In VirtualDub, open the source clip.
    3. Under VIDEO, select COMPRESSION, choose the DivX Fast Codec, under the CONFIGURE box to the right, go in and specify 5 Keyframe Interval, and up the speed to 3000 kbps on the bottom slide bar.
    4. Make sure that the VIDEO settings are set for FULL PROCESSING MODE (default)
    5. Next for the Audio, choose CONVERSION, then choose 8000 by 16 Bit, Mono
    6. Again, Under AUDIO, choose COMPRESSION.
    7. Choose MPEG-Layer 3 Codec, then select the format of 8000 by 16 bit, Mono.
    8. Under AUDIO again, make sure that the mode is set to FULL PROCESSING MODE.
    9. Under FILE, choose save .avi and you're rolling......

VirtualDub used to crash for me too, when attempting to use the DivX-audio compression format for audio - try it with the MPEG-3 codec for the audio and whichever DivX codec (Low/High Motion) for video and it should work (atleast it has, every time for me).

You should be using the DivX 3.11alpha version for this.

  6. i use Divx low motion with with keyframes set for every 10 seconds. i adjust the data rate slider based on the file size i am looking for. i have noticed problems going under 600 with that.

i use DivX audio when i convert stuff to divx. i have had problems in Vdub trying to use other audio codecs, as a matter of fact i also have had lockups when using a setting that does not specifically state for divx in the audio compression dialog. again like noname said make sure that video compression is set to FULL PROCESSING MODE.

with regards to the hacked codec warning there should be a little check box in that window to stop it from ever showing again
