I tried FAVC on a couple AVI files. In all cases (NTSC and PAL, the ones I've played just fine, could be AC3 or MP3 audio) I got NO AUDIO in the resulting VOBs at all, and I got no error message at all warning me that anything's amiss!

I recovered some files... the MPGs have MP2's in them, so it's the AUTHORING step that somehow wiped out the audio. :P

That is very odd. My first thought is that perhaps it is a problem with playback rather than the authoring. Have you tried opening the vob/vobs in Media Player Classic or VideoLan?
Try burning the disc (preferably on a rw disc) and play it in a standalone dvd player?
Try to open the vob files in GSpot or MediaInfo and confirm that there is no audio in the vob?
If all of the above confirms that there is no audio in the vobs then I'm just confused! It would of course be possible to load the working mpg file into something like dvdauthorgui and create a disc that way. -
The soundless playback was from MPC. Trying VLC next.
FYI, I just did a DVDunauthor of an DVD I did with DivxtoDVD and this is the output. I thought the output would be virtually identical, but the FAVC seems to be missing a few more fields... Hmmm...

Mystery deepens. The VIDEO_TS folder plays fine in VLC. However, double-clicking the VIIDEO_TS.IFO file (which is my usual way to start the DVD with MPC results in no audio).
Wonder what does PowerDVD say about it? Trying it now... PowerDVD votes OK. So... Somehow my MPC is NOT playing back MP2-audio DVDs. :P Sorry for the false alarm.
