  1. I'm thinking of getting an Big screen Plasma or LCD TV to use with my non-HD Satellite receiver. But I would like to know if the picture will be as good as my CRT. Or will I have any other problems? Thanks.

LCD TV is a progressive display. Satellite is interlaced NTSC/PAL.

LCD displays generally work well with progressive DVD and HDTV but are at their worst with 480i.

To get good picture, the LCD TV needs a good deinterlacer. Most cheap ones don't. Look for a model with higher end Faroudja DCDi or Sony WEGA deinterlace processing. Also look for "cinema" reverse telecine features that will improve 480i movies.

Evaluate the TV with standard S-Video NTSC inputs because that is what you get from satellite. If your satellite tuner only has composite NTSC out, the TV should also have a comb filter.

  3. In short I recently added a LCD TV. I now use it for TV and Computer monitor.

However the SD channels from Dishnetwork look a bit poorer than my old TV set which hid any defects. The HD channeles look better. Costs me $20 a month more +- for the added hd channels though.

However I feed it through a HD sat receiver I had installed first and that lets me get the most out of the SD channels picture. that way I can feed 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i to the TV via HDMI or composite. I chose HDMI.

The big loser in viewing pleasure is any DVDs I created that were of marginal quality now look like dreck! Some of my old source were 544 by 480 @ Approx 1 Gig of disc space per hour of recorded material, Not my decision that is the way they broadcast. OTOH Commercial DVDs I bought look better than before

Anyone thinking of buying a Plasma or LCD screen should 'Google' SED Television.

Expected to be released around this time next year it will make Plasma & LCD screens obsolite.

I guess you mean Component, not Composite.

  7. I'm going to ask this another way. Besides a satellite HD receiver making HD channel look good, what does it do to make non-HD channels look good?
