    Hi

I converted tv captures to DVD-compliant Mpeg2, using TMPGEnc. Now I'd like to make subtitles either switchable or hardcoded: I intend to use Aegisub or Subtitle Workshop (BTW, which one is most reliable in terms of sync?).

I was thinking about getting TMPGEnc DVD Author, but I can't see how to add subtitles with it, so maybe I need some other tool?

    thanks in advance!

You are correct. TDA is not the right tool for authoring DVDs with subtitles. I'm not sure what tool to recommend since I don't do subtitles, but I thought you might like confirmation that TDA doesn't do them.

What tool to use for authoring? It depends on what you intend to do.

If you don't need menus, try muxman or IFOEdit. Both support subtitles.

If you need menus there is a whole range available. GUI for dvdauthor is a freeware option, but search the tools section and see you find that what fits your need.

I intend to use Aegisub or Subtitle Workshop (BTW, which one is most reliable in terms of sync?).
I don't know what you mean with reliable. I have used both, and if you set a subtitle to start at a certain time, that's when it starts. Aegisub has the advantage that it shows a graph of the sound which makes it easier to set correct start times for the text.

Another program to try is VisualSubSync. I have not tried it myself but it looks interesting, I am going to use it when I create subs the next time (whenever that will be).

I have found that the most important tool to use for creating subtitles is patience. It takes time but the result can be quite rewarding. Good luck!

I'd go for DVD-Lab Pro - excellent authoring app, and has support for subtitles. Can import .srt text subs.
