    Hi, folks.

I'm new here but have been searching for over a day for a hint as to what my problem might be. Any help is appreciated.

I've got a VBOX Cat's Eye 150 HDTV receiver card in a Windows XP SP2 Viiv PC that uses BeyondTV to record ATSC OTA transport streams. I have been using HDTV2DVD to convert 480i programs to a set of VOB's, IFO's, BUP's.,etc. That all seems to go well. The VOB's play in PowerDVD no problem.

I've then been using Nero Express 6's DVD compilation feature to burn the folder to a blank DVD.

The problem is, the burned DVD will then only play in the drive it was burned in. The DVD-ROM in the same machine can't read it, nor can my Sony 755 set-top DVD player (plays everything: DIVx, SVCD, SACD, etc.) even though the same blank media plays OK in it as DVD backups, MP3's, etc. The discs won't play in my other PC's DVD-ROM either. The Sony eventually displays "cannot play" but the PC's just sit and stew ("READ" light on drive stays lit) hanging Explorer.

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Everything is set for type 5 (4.7 GB) DVD and the disc space used is only 1.9 GB. I've even had Nero verify the burn to no avail. I also tried using Nero to create an iso image and then burning that with no better luck.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  2. Nero doesn't always work right for burning DVD videos.

If you have properly authored DVD Folders on your harddrive (VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS) you could try using the new ImgBurn 2.0 to burn your DVD with. It will do a much better job at burning DVD video than Nero will.

There is a link on the main page that lists a walkthrough on how to create images and burn DVD's with ImgBurn.

    Take Care,

Thanks for the tip, LLoyd. I'll give ImgBurn a try.

It seems these things are always more difficult than they appear at first blush, aren't they?

I'm trying Sonic MyDVD right now and my CPU has been pegged at 100% for over thirty minutes and the "Importing Media" progress bar hasn't budged from about 95% in nearly that time. I guess that's not going to work either. :^)

  4. I used to use Nerovision Express to compile my DVD's with and really never had any trouble with them. I just wasn't happy with the menus that it created, and the fact that it wanted to reencode the video on me even though it didn't need it. After reading lots of posts and plenty of tutorials here I've found plenty of tools that can do the job much better than Nero can. Nero is great for burning Data, but that's about it.

I usually encode MPG video using a combination of AVISynth and TMPGEnc (Saving as elementary streams) and encode the audio to AC3 using BeSweet and BeLight.

I then author and compile the DVD using DVD-Lab and burn with ImgBurn. This seems to work quite well for me.

I tried Sonic MyDVD and it never worked right for me. I didn't like the way it did chapter placement and it seemed a bit cumbersome to me. Of course, that might have changed in the last few releases.

TDA (TMPG DVD Author) is supposed to be really good. Most people here swear by it, but I've never tried it. What I've seen of it though it looks pretty easy to use and may be worth looking at.

Good Luck! I hope it works for you.

Well, Lloyd, I tried ImgBurn but was still burning coasters. Switched media to a DVD+RW (from DVD-R) and, voila, success!

Cripes! If it's not one thing it's another.

Thanks for your help. I do like ImgBurn a lot so it wasn't a completely wasted struggle.
